In preperation for Thanksgiving 1995 I was talking on the phone with my sister who was a flight attendant for United Airlines. She casually mentioned that she guessed the passes would go unused that year. WHAT PASSES? Only Mom and Dad got passes! She patiently explained that UAL had changed their policy and instead of 'family passes' they now gave out 'companion passes.' She had offered them to one of our brothers and he said he couldn't use them, so she guessed they would just go to waste.
I asked her why she had not offered one to me. She asked, "But where would you go?"
"What's the farthest away place you fly to?" I asked.
"Australia," was her reply.
"Good, I'll go!" That's how easy it is for me to make a decision. I had gotten certied as a SCUBA diver the year prior and went diving every chance I got. She asked if I didn't need to take a dive buddy with me, if so I would need two passes. Then she threw in the kicker: Travel had to begin before the end of the year. That was 6 weeks away and I was preparing to have her and as many other relatives as could make it to my house for Thanksgiving dinner.
I guess other people can't make last minute decision for such a great bargain. All I had to do was pay the tax on the ticket.
Long story shortened - On December 28, 1995 - by myself. ---- I'm writing this - please come back soon to see if I have finished.
